Local Training at your Trust
The last two years have presented unprecedented challenges for our maternity workforce, which has inevitably had an impact on the capacity of our staff to complete both essential maternity training and additional training to further support you in your roles. As we work towards recovery of staffing levels across all four of our provider Trusts and ensuring staff have well-being support, we are continuing to develop resources and useful links to training and development opportunities, which are all accessible through this resource hub.
Much work has already been done collaboratively across the system and you can find information through the links at the top of this page for:
- Essential Maternity Training: A comprehensive Training Needs Analysis has been developed in collaboration with all four maternity provider Trusts which clearly maps all the essential training required for you to complete to be compliant. A longer-term piece of work will continue to support standardised training across the patch.
- Transformational Training: A number of supportive transformational training packages have been developed for staff, to enhance confidence and capability in key areas of your role. There are also links to packages which have been developed nationally to support professional development
- Leadership & CPD: As a system we are working together to create opportunities for developing both senior leadership in maternity across Lancashire and South Cumbria and other opportunities for leadership as part of your roles within maternity, at your individual Trusts. In addition, you can access development opportunities through NHS partnership organisations.
- Local training at your Trust: Each Trust has a list of internal training and development courses and resources that you can access through your site and a dedicated Practice Development Midwife for support and advice.
“Being a part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, in whatever capacity, means being a part of one big team. We think our staff are fantastic and are the real driving force behind making us such a great place to work, which is why we love to celebrate them at every opportunity.
We also love to reward them for choosing to grow their career with us, so we ensure that all doors remain open for progression and staff are given the chance to develop their skills, learn new ones, and take on extra responsibility when they’re ready to try a different challenge. Sounds pretty great, right?
We think so and we know you will too!”

As one of the United Kingdom’s largest coastal resort, Blackpool has plenty to offer its residents – it’s not just a good place to work; it’s a great place to live. In addition to its bustling centre and historic seafront, the town is world famous for its many attractions, including the famous Blackpool Tower.
Blackpool also offers a number of scenic cycling routes round our local parks and across the surrounding countryside, as well as boasting panoramic views of the coast on its picturesque Promenade.
Due to Blackpool’s convenient location, Edinburgh in the north and London in the south can be reached within three hours by train. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals encourages flexible working in all our roles to support staff in maintaining healthy home-life balance.

We want to make Lancashire and South Cumbria a place where our maternity workforce has the support to access any resources that will enhance your working experience within the system and enable you to develop and progress in your career. We welcome any suggestions for additional elements we can include in this resource hub to support you in this.

Hayley Craig
Maternity Training & Development Lead
Bio
Hi I’m Hayley Craig, Maternity Training & Development Lead at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. I’m a registered midwife with a passion for the development of student midwives, midwives and medical students within maternity services.
I have previously worked as the maternity PEF leading on the Enabling Effective Learning Environments project, which was a proof of concept to prove the need for a midwifery PEF, the outcome of which was funding for further midwifery PEFs across the LMS. I also piloted a change in student rostering by using Eroster which was a great success. Hobbies outside of work are creating meditation videos and going on ghost hunts.

Helena Brown UHMBT
PROMPT instructor
Bio
Helena Brown qualified in midwifery in 2014 and joined the midwifery education team at Morecambe Bay Hospitals trust in 2016. Now Practice Development midwife within the trust, Helena is a trained PROMPT instructor and on the bank of lecturers at the University of Cumbria. With a background in dramatic arts, Helena is always keen to promote innovative and engaging learning in a way that is visually and mentally stimulating.
Helena believes that the midwifery profession is rooted in both head and heart, and her training methods always strive to reflect this. Helena is particularly passionate about supporting the transition from student to qualified professional – a time she remembers herself keenly – and works with the local maternity network to improve preceptorship support and training.
Outside of her professional role, Helena bakes cakes and enjoys spending time with her 4 teenage children and sausage dog ‘Dotty.’
Justine Eadie
Project Lead for Continuity of Carer
Bio
I began my nurse training in 1991, working on an acute medical ward until commencing my midwifery training in 1996 at ULCAN. I qualified as a midwife in 1998.
My background includes working in a traditional community midwifery team for 22 years, during this time I felt passionate about caring for women and their families in my care.
As a qualified midwife I have enjoyed the teaching side of my role, always embracing working with students and newly qualified staff.
In my current role my aim is to ensure all newly qualified midwives have a sense of belonging in our unit and feel safe, in a nurturing and compassionate culture that supports all staff within our team.
Here at Blackpool, we want all staff to have a voice that counts to ensure we create a healthy work culture. We recognise that emotional health is vital if we are to remain well at work so the support structure is also based around wellbeing.
I encourage all newly qualified midwives to think about their immediate and future career aspirations. I believe this aids with job embeddedness and gives staff the opportunity to discuss their development.
I am passionate about giving my full commitment to this role and I am thoroughly enjoying supporting the newly qualified midwives on their journey to obtaining their Band 6.
